Winter month
Winter holidays are over
& the Winter has started!
It's been a few weeks already that I took the plane from Riga (Latvia) to Belgium to celebrate Christmas at home. It's not that I went from a place where they'd have "white Christmas" to a place where it's "black Christmas". In both countries there was no snow. Instead there were soft temperatures and enjoyable sunshine.
Being back in Belgium made me think..
It's true indeed that in Belgium you see more people talking, laughing & greeting you in public spaces. On the other hand and due to the higher number of inhabitants, the rush in Belgium is way higher. In comparison with Tallinn region and Estonia, Flanders doesn't have that much (wild) nature. I missed the beautiful pine trees and the random trees in between the houses. BUT the coffee in Belgium is better (ànd they give a cookie whereas Estonians don't)!
It started snowing on new year!
Almost the whole country must have been thinking "FINALLY, snow has come!". One of the reasons why snow is so precious to the Estonians is that it makes the environment brighter. On top of the fact that it get's dark early, everything looks dark if there is no snow.
And guess what?! It started snowing at 31/01 - 01/01 at 00:00h! I couldn't imagine a better thing for new year! Talking about new year, I celebrated new year's eve at the Estonian countryside! One of my dear Estonian friend's invited me to join her and together we went to a cabin in the middle of the forest.

<<About nine people gathered around the wooden table.
They enjoyed the Salmon and potato-vegetable salad (prepared the Estonian way) and with a zip from the crystal glas they ceremonially opened the evening.
They talked and played games until it was time to go outside and light the fireworks. Snowflakes fell down upon their thick coats and after a moment of silence every one said "HEAD UUT AASTAT"!
Snow in Tallinn perfect time to visit Estonia (-17°C) |
But the night was not over yet, not before having had sauna and the ritual of melting tin. Finally around 7am - people were satisfied and went to bed - up there, in the wooden cabin in the woods.>>
